Houston's Problem? Comets Disbanded

The WNBA's Houston Comets franchise recently was disbanded. Having won the first four WNBA titles, this was one of the league's most successful franchises.

Is this the beginning of the end for the WNBA or is this simply an isolated situation?

I don't believe this is the beginning of the end for the WNBA. Sure, it's still a young lead by comparison--about 10 years old--and with youth, there's always the greater chance of suffering from financial insecurity. However, there have been contraction talks in other sports--baseball immediately comes to mind--and those discussions haven't led to debates about whether MLB would fold.

It's too early to panic. The greater issue is how this economy will hinder all sports teams, not just the WNBA.

The former owner of the Comets was the owner of the Rockets. He didn't really give a damn about women's basketball, and he wanted the team sold as soon as possible. It ended up in the hands of somebody who didn't really have the money to run it, so he ran it on the cheap.

Furthermore, the Comets roster got old. Combine the above and Houston was in a bad situation.

If the New York Liberty disappear, then we should worry about the WNBA.

That's for the fan to decide.
